If it came down to the same car, same year, same model, same color, same everything except for the transmission… I personally would choose manual transmission over automatic. However I know people do not like manual like I do, most people would choose automatic. Why? Because Automatic is easy and requires nothing. Manual is harder and takes up a free hand.
So why would I like manual?
Well, for several reasons: I love manual cars because I do like to shift it gives the sensation of being in a race like Nascar, but there are also very practical reasons for choosing manual over automatic. Such as: It is proven that manual uses less gas, for the easy and simple reason of a higher gear. In most manual cars there are at least 5 gears and some have 6 or more. Most automatic cars there are only 4, meaning the engine has to work harder to achieve the higher speeds. Also, manual transmissions are very cheap compared to automatic. When buying a car you will notice that automatic cars can be sometimes one thousand dollars more expensive than a manual car of the same caliber! This is also true when replacing your transmission if it broke, an automatic transmission is extremely complicated so it is quite expensive, manual transmissions are relatively simple and easy to produce therefore is less expensive! The last big reason for buying a manual over an automatic is car maintenance, manual transmissions will last much longer than automatic several years longer in fact (depending on the driver of course). So all in all, the manual transmission is a smarter buy, but harder to use; and the automatic is an easier to use but harder to keep up; but yes the majority of the population on earth prefer automatic shift transmissions Because they are easy in the car. you have a free hand so you can: talk on a cell phone, or eat a meal, or change the radio or nowadays play with your GPS! But I have found a happy middle: A slap-stick transmission. Its found in my car: 2003 Mazda Protégé 5. You have the benefits of an automatic and the downsides of it as well, but you do get to shift your car whenever YOU want to! Or just slap it over to automatic and don’t worry about it…I must say… I love it.vote upvote downshareprintflag

the difference of automatic between manual is gear and if automatic is been low battery you need to recharge it if you didn't charge it you cannot use it and manual if battery is low you can just push the car and thats it. manual is good but automatic is better because is easy to use, manual so many accident on that because it's hard to use though.
I love Manual Transmission. I live in Australia, and am still happily driving my 1980 XD Ford Falcon and 1973 Holden HQ Belmont, both fantastic vehicles!
I'd never go for an Automatic trans, slapstick or otherwise. Manual is for me :D
I love my manual cars..its safer to and drive and the driver has control of his speed
I love manual because it gives me the feel of driving which automatic doesn't. Also,on rough terrain, manual is more reliable. Only problem is in slow traffic, the foot on the clutch gets overworked.
Manual for me is the best. I can switch to eco mode (shifting at lower rpm) or sporty driving.
I can also do engine breaking if needed.

What is it with Americans assuming that the USA is the world? Never mind the "World Series", which hardly anyone outside America who isn't American cares about, I very much doubt that "the majority of the population on earth prefer automatic shift transmissions." Most people in Europe drive manuals out of preference. These days the majority of drivers are anyway in developing countries and I doubt they can afford the increased outlay and maintenance of autos, even if they wanted to drive autos.

the traffic here is "chaotic". i mean traffic jam, bottle neck street, narrow street, broken street, sick motorcycle rider, careless predesterian, tight parking etc..
trust me, if you can drive here, you can drive everywhere in this universe...
but people is prefer conventional manual transmission than automatic.

@Kleran Madde. What are YOU talking about. The only reason people in Europe didnt buy manuals is because of the expenses that came with it. NOT the preferences. Now that there re more and more automatic cars in Europe, everyone is buying them, because the fact is, they are easier to use.
I love to drive manual because I'm not dump ass american who can NOT synchronize hands and legs.
